As a former member, it is nice to see that Westerly Ambulance is still moving forward, and I am proud to say I was a member at one time.
To this day I still tell stories of my days at WAC !!!!

Although career and family have taken me far from home over the years, I still keep tabs on Westerly and area via the internet. And I'll occasionally drop in on the WAC website to stay abreast of the latest and greatest. Whenever I do, memories of my years with the Corps and its rescue squad (late 1950's and through the 1960's)are refreshed. For example, Arnold "Bill" Clarke, who helped organize the rescue squad, knew I had neighborhood connections with Tom Perry of the Washington Trust Co. Old Tom had a reputation of being a penny-pincher, walking to work at the bank every day from his big house on Margin Street (even though he had a Mercedes parked in his garage). Arnold put me up to soliciting Tom for a contribution to purchase the squad's first Jeep, a CJ-5 open model. In my late teens, my knees were quaking as I knocked on Tom's front door. Tom insisted on my making the full pitch, but I think he'd already written his $500 check before I even arrived. A lot of TLC went into the volunteer handwork that produced the first rescue truck, as well as adapting the Jeep for beach rescue work. All of you now active in the Corps have a long and honorable tradition behind you. Stand tall as you serve! Would love to hear from any of you who remember me.
